Braxton Greer – PMB Broadcasting Intern

So far, with my internship at PMB Broadcasting, I have had a great time learning different things over the first three weeks of school. So far, the main thing that I have been doing at the internship is learning different imaging techniques within the radio. This past Sunday, January 28, I attended my first event with the radio station. Being able to meet people all around the station and from other stations was a very cool experience. Something that the radio station has taught me is how to act in a professional setting in the real world. This is my first time being in an actual business where the company is smaller, and all pieces must work together. My public speaking and workplace language have been improved by the type of people that I have had to work around. Overall, I am very excited to see what things come later in the semester. There are a lot of things that can transpire in the semester, and I can’t wait to see.

WRBL Internship- Day 2

2/20/24- 3:00 to 5:30

Today I shadowed Liz Ortega and learned how post-production is done at WRBL. Post-production is primarily done using Adobe Premiere. There is a database that lists all the various stories that WRBL is covering for their 5, 5:30, and 6 PM shows. Liz went back and forth with various stories that needed editing. Typically, there are three main portals that stories and footage are downloaded from. Liz showed me these portals and how she typically gets footage from them. I shadowed her as she did various editing in Adobe Premiere up until around 4:30. At this point, she showed me the studio where the live show is run behind the scenes, and I watched the day’s news program in the 5:00 to 5:30 range.

This training will help me learn editing and post-production, which is a very valuable and much-needed part of news production.

The day was positive, fulfilling, and a strong learning environment overall.

WRBL Internship – Day 1- 2/05/24

Today was the first day of my WRBL internship. I worked from about 3 to 5:30 PM. Today was mostly an introduction to the location, people, and workspace. I met with Connor and got my login information set up. Next, I worked alongside Nico Brooke to see how WordPress worked. WordPress is primarily where WRBL locates, writes, and shares news stories. With Nico, I was given a press release and she got me to practice writing an article about it to be published on WRBL’s website. At 5:00 PM, I went to a behind-the-scenes studio room and watched a live production of WRBL’s 5 PM news.

What I mostly learned today was how news and writing are acquired by WRBL and how they go about publishing news. This experience can give me a sense of what is typically considered newsworthy and therefore a good idea of what is going on locally. My overall perspective was welcoming. Everyone was nice, positive, patient, and eager for me to learn and be a part of their team.

Week Two

Throughout this week at WRBL, I focused on honing my editing skills and gaining insight into live broadcasting. I began by piecing together several packages and using the techniques I had learned the previous week. Witnessing my progress in editing was great, as I felt myself becoming more skilled with each project. As I continued editing stories and integrating them into the show, I also delved into the realm of graphics. Operating the graphics during the live broadcast involved the use of various buttons, which were “take 4,” “out,” and “in,” which initially seemed nerve-racking. However, after observing and shadowing a colleague, I gained confidence in handling them. Eventually, I took on graphics during the show. I successfully executed them and received positive feedback that boosted my confidence. The experience proved both enjoyable and enlightening, sparking my enthusiasm for future opportunities in this domain. I am convinced that the hands-on exposure to graphics and my continued practice of editing has improved my skill set and self-assurance, making me well for a career in broadcasting or film production. Reflecting on this week’s internship experience, I am thoroughly pleased with my progress and eagerly anticipate further learning and growth in the weeks ahead.

Erin Walsh – WRBL Intern

This week I started by continuing learning and editing videos to go on the 5, 5:30, and 6 o‘clock show. I learned how to edit PKGS, SOTS, VOs, and their app pushes. I am just beginning to feel comfortable with the editing and can do it pretty much entirely myself. After everything was in for the shows, I headed over to the control room. I was mostly shadowing audio to learn the board. However, on Wednesday I ran sound for 2 blocks and felt confident I could run it longer.

Internship Blog #2

This week I learned that digital news reporting is slow. In total, I have written two articles this week. That being said, these articles have been important in reinforcing my AP-style writing skills. The point of writing for a news website is to turn around news as fast as possible, so being able to write quickly and efficiently within certain writing styles is key to the success of online reporting.

Though reporting is fast, sometimes the news you report on is not quickly delivered to you. Other times, the information you do receive isn’t really news, and sometimes what is newsworthy doesn’t give you a lot of details. The important part is realizing that sometimes you are beholden to the information you receive. News writing is not a process that involves making up information. It is about telling people what actually happened.

All in all, the experience this week has been a good one and, in the future, I plan to do some shadowing in the field and more work on broadcast production.

Isabella Garcia – PMB Broadcasting Intern

This week at PMB Broadcasting I went in on Wednesday for a little over three hours. I did the same thing as last week and made some imaging pieces that will hopefully be played on the radio at some point. This week I learned more tricks on how to make the piece sound unique and different from the ones that I made last week. I worked alongside the other intern again this week who taught me different things that I can do with Adobe Audition. The learning curve for Adobe Audition was different from other editing software that I have used in the past, but I now have a better understanding of how to work with it. Even though sometimes Adobe Audition can be a little frustrating to learn, I feel that I have picked it up pretty quickly and I am enjoying learning the different things that I can do with it.

Internship Blog 1 – Columbus Water Works (CWW)

Last week, I worked on content for CWW’s Facebook page where they post water facts. I used previous information in their folders as well as the internet to provide my facts, and then I used the application, Canva, to design and create the posts. The design specialist I work with showed me some previous examples and taught me how to incorporate their logo into each post. Below are some examples of the designs I created:

I have previously worked with Canva in my integrated media class to create thumbnails for my YouTube videos, but this type of formatting was different for me. Getting to experiment and play around with the unique features of the application helped me learn a lot more.

Previously, I had worked with the design specialist to design a new format for their Anniversary posts that they display on slideshow screens throughout CWW buildings. The design specialist helped me tweak my design until we settled on the final one, and then I used an Excel sheet to narrow down each month’s anniversaries and format them onto individual slides divided up by weeks of the month. I did this for the rest of the months of 2024. Below is an example:

I have used PowerPoint several times in my school career but using it for this purpose was new to me. I was able to experiment and try out unique features on the application. Although I do not have much previous experience with Excel, the design specialist guided me through several of its features and showed me how to better utilize the application to save time and organize more efficiently

Internship submission #1

This week at PMB Broadcasting, I went in on Monday and Wednesday for about two hours each day. Both days I was working on Imaging, and making pieces that can go before and after songs on the radio. I learned many tips and tricks from my other classmate who is also working there as an intern and from Mr. Arwood.  If I ever need to edit audio, I can successfully do so with the skills I learned through Adobe. My overall internship perspectives are to eventually learn how to edit audio better and to just learn more about how the radio works. I am also looking forward to later in the semester when we will help with the Friday night concert series.

Internship Blog #1

Currently, I am working with online content producers in the newsroom. I am honing my writing skills so they are up to the standards for online news writing content.

I have learned a lot about online content curation and creation for news media, including how those stories are discovered and what is considered actually “newsworthy.” Not all press releases sent to the media contain something of substance and not everything that looks like news is actual news. Learning how to tell which is which helps improve my ability to find interesting stories that people will actually want to read. Since these stories are mostly posted directly to the news website and not all of them get sent to air on the TV broadcast, the turnaround time is fast. This helps me learn how to draft an interesting story quickly and efficiently.

As it stands, my perspective on the internship is not super complex or deep, mostly because I have only been at WRBL for two days. The staff are nice and willing to help with any questions I have, and they are also very quick to ask me questions to test some of my knowledge of the things I have learned. Overall, my current experience is a good one.
