Nailing the Floor

This week, I finally tackled learning the floor. The floor person’s job is to cue the anchors and let them know when they are on camera and which camera to look at. They are also responsible for white balancing the cameras, moving the cameras to different locations, keeping the meteorologist on time with his forecast, and letting the anchors know how long they have during breaks. I’ve been nervous about learning how to work the floor because the equipment is big and expensive. However, working the floor is a lot easier than I thought it would be. I do have difficulty moving some of the cameras because the wheels get locked easily. That being said, I do really like working the floor. You really feel like you’re helping create the newscast as it happens. You have to be ready to think on your feet and problem solve in the moment. That makes being on the floor exciting to me.
